How to Write Your First eBook

Jun 30

Despite what some internet marketers say, ebooks are not dead, and they’re not out of style. On the contrary, they’re an extremely useful tool you need in your internet marketing tool box.

One thing I use ebooks for is as giveaways to get people to opt-in to my email lists.

This whole email, e-book giveaway strategy is what’s actually called permission marketing. Permission marketing is a term coined by Seth Godin, marketing guru extraordinaire, back when the Internet was in its infancy. (Pre-9/11)

Seth’s basic idea was that the type of marketing we grew up with is essentially interruption marketing. The advertiser tries to interrupt what we’re doing and makes us pay attention to his ad, hopefully long enough to get interested in what he has to sell.

As we get more and more advertising messages in our lives, more demands on our attention, we’ve grown more and more resistant to interruption marketing.

Enter Permission Marketing.

With permission marketing the marketer (You and I) get the prospects’ permission to market to them.

A great way to do this is to combine squeeze pages with ebook giveaways. What you do is offer the prospect an e-book in exchange for their email. Then we market to them not with the idea of making an immediate sale, but with the idea of building a long lasting relationship.

Enough of the theory! Let’s look at what you have to do to actually create your first book.

The steps you need to take are these:

  • Choose a topic you think will interest your list
  • Decide how long you want your e-book to be
  • Write an outline
  • Write the sales letter for the e-book (squeeze page)
  • Set up a writing schedule
  • Write the book
  • Turn it into a PDF file
  • Host the book on your website
  • Set up your autoresponder so it automatically sends the person the book when they validate their opt-in.

Broken down like this, it’s entirely possible to write a 10 to 20 page ebook in a day or two.

Combine that ebook with a list building squeeze page and you’ll build a list that will pay you big bucks for years to come!
